Achilles Tendonitis (Achilles Tendon Injury)

What is it?

The Achilles Tendon is a band of tissue that connects the heal bone to the calf muscle. Inflammation, which causes pain can be caused by a tear of the tendon or by irritation.

How does this occur?

Achilles Tendonitis can be caused by:

  • Overuse - eg an increase of training.
  • Tight/short calf muscles
  • Over pronation (flat feet) and wearing insufficiently supportive footwear eg Wellington boots or flip flops

How do I know I've got it?

  • Pain and swelling over the Achilles Tendon
  • Acute tenderness over the Achilles Tendon
  • Pain on standing on tip toe, ascending and descending stairs and running

What can I do to help?

  • Apply ice for 10 minutes every two hours
  • Avoid painful activity
  • See a physiotherapist!

What will the physiotherapist do?

  • Fully assess the problem to find out what is causing it eg overuse, over pronation etc
  • Ultrasound
  • Massage
  • Acupuncture
  • Advice on activity and a rehabilitation programme to resolve the problem and prevent further occurrences
